East Gippsland Shire Council is reminding Mallacoota residents that the collection of firewood from the Mallacoota Aerodrome site is prohibited.
In 2016 Council implemented a tree removal program at the site to improve safety of aerodrome operations in line with obstacle clearance requirements for aircraft. These works generated large amounts of fallen timber.
Council’s director operations Chris Waites said following the works Council allowed limited access for members of the public to collect firewood for personal use.
“The fallen timber that resulted from the obstacle clearance works has since been collected,” Mr Waites said.
“We would like to remind everyone, that any previous approval to collect firewood from the Mallacoota Aerodrome is not ongoing and no longer applies.
“As is the case with all Council managed land, firewood collection is not permitted from the Mallacoota Aerodrome site.
“Over coming years, further tree falling activities may be required to ensure the Mallacoota Aerodrome meets safety standards. Should these activities generate significant amounts of fallen timber, Council may consider allowing access for personal firewood collection in nominated areas.”
