COUNCIL NEWS 18 JULY 2018

The construction of a new State-of-the-Art Grenfell Medical Centre/Health Hub is continuing.  

The construction which is one of a number of capital infrastructure projects Council has in progress will see a fit for purpose building including five consulting rooms, minor operations room, practice manager room, practice nurse room, medical meeting rooms, reception area, kitchen, storage facilities, office spaces and a dental services area with 2 consultation spaces developed. The Medical Centre will be of a very high standard and designed to serve the community well into the future. It will also include e-Health capacity with excellent digital integration facilitating collaboration and connectivity between the Health Hub, Grenfell MPS and the Orange Health Service.

This modern facility will be a ‘game changer’ in attracting and retaining General Practitioners (GPs) and facilitating the delivery of health services to the residents of the Weddin Shire for many years into the future.

   

The Member for Cootamundra the Hon Stephanie Cooke MP recently visited the site of the new Lignum Creek bridge to mark the start of work on the replacement bridge along the Mid Western Highway.

The NSW Government provided $6.7 million under the Bridges for the Bush program for the work to demolish the existing old wooden bridge and replace it with a new, wider 72 metre long concrete bridge which can better accommodate heavy vehicles.

The existing bridge was built in 1937 and is narrow, in poor condition and with around 150 vehicles travelling along this section of the road each day, including 15 heavy vehicles, a new bridge is needed to accommodate this usage and improve road user safety.

A bypass track has already been built by Council and will be used to divert traffic during the work on the new bridge, ensuring as few traffic disruptions as possible along the Mid Western highway.

The construction of the bridge which will be another major infrastructure assets upgrade in the Shire is planned to be completed by mid-2019.

While the upgrade of the Lignum Creek Bridge is in progress there are a number of other major capital projects in progress. Council’s works program is continuing and the following works have been completed, are currently in progress or about to commence:

Bewleys road construction continuing Slashing program completed Emu Creek rehabilitation continuing Street Sweeping completed Caragabal park upgrade works continuing Quandialla footpath construction continuing

These works are all part of Councils works programme and are vital to ensure our assets are upgraded and maintained for the benefit of our residents.

There is certainly a lot happening in the next month which is excellent as these events are very important to the economic and social fabric of our Shire.

Member for Cootamundra the Hon Stephanie Cooke MP has announced that $4.6 million is now available across the state for upgrading or creating new sports facilities, new sport programs, community events and projects that improve sports participation.

Local sports groups across the Cootamundra electorate are being encouraged to apply for the latest round of funding under the NSW Government’s Local Sport Grant Program. Thousands of local clubs can apply with up to $50,000 set aside just for us in the Cootamundra electorate.

The Local Sports Grant Program is open and applications will be accepted until August 24, 2018.

Nominations are now open for the annual Australian Grandparent of the Year Award (GOTYA). The GOTYA has been designed to raise the profile of Grandparents in Australia by recognising the extraordinary contribution by a Grandparent to the family and the community.

Entry is via the Official Entry Form and should be the original work of the author, consisting of 500 words or less about “Why (my) Grandparent should be Australia’s Grandparent of the Year OR Community Service Grandparent of the Year”. 

A brief overview of the nominee, highlighting their outstanding attributes along with examples citing the long-term benefits of the nominee’s contribution to the family and the community should be included.

Nominations are now open and will be received no later than midnight on Thursday 27 September 2018 (AEST) at www.grandparentsdaymagazine.com  

The current exhibition at the Art Gallery is "Commonality " by local artist Brent Logan which opened Wednesday 13 June and is on display until 22 July 2018.   

Brent’s work aims to explore the human condition in an ever changing society through environmental     portraiture. He uses photography as a story telling tool to showcase diversity throughout the community, but most importantly to show the common goal of acceptance and inclusion to all that emerges through our differences.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to visit the Art Gallery to view the exhibition.

The Art Gallery is open Monday to Friday 10am - 4pm, Saturday 10am - 3pm & Sunday 10am -2pm.

A thank you dinner for the Henry Lawson Festival Committee members and volunteers was held on Friday, 13 July 2018 at the Grenfell Bowling Club and was a very enjoyable evening.

President Alan Griffiths thanked everybody for their efforts in making the 61st Henry Lawson Festival a great success and advised he looked forward to another excellent Henry Lawson Festival in 2019.

DRAFT WEDDIN WELLNESS PLAN

Resident are hereby advised that a Draft Weddin Wellness Plan has been prepared to assist in better facilitating the coordination of health services in the Weddin Shire and to better understand the future health needs of our community.

The draft Plan will be on public exhibition for comment from Wednesday 11 July 2018 to Friday 10 August 2018. 

Submissions will be received up until 4.00 pm on Friday 10 August 2018. The draft plan can be viewed at the Council Chambers or on the website www.weddin.nsw.gov.au

OVERSEER

Council is seeking a highly motivated person to join Council’s Engineering Department as Overseer. 

A formal qualification as an Overseer may be an advantage but is not essential. WH&S and Workplace Trainer/assessor qualifications would be an advantage.

The position is classified between Grade 13- 16 on Councils salary system with a salary range of

$1,152.45 - $1473.45 per week depending on qualifications and experience. This position is open to 4 x 2 ½ % salary increments subject to performance and Council’s satisfaction.
