COUNCIL NEWS 16 MAY 2018

Weddin Shire’s biggest event of the year is fast approaching! The 61st Henry Lawson Festival, which attracts many visitors to Grenfell every year to enjoy an entertaining long weekend with family and friends, will be held this year from 7th – 11th June, 2018. The lead-up to the weekend is well underway with many fundraising events taking place for this year’s five Festival Queen entrants.

The events leading up to the Festival are critical as they assist in generating a tremendous amount of interest and momentum leading into the Festival which in turn assists in ensuring it will be another outstanding success.

In this regard, new festival themed banners will soon arrive and be erected along Grenfell’s Main Street. Similar to the lead-up events, the banners will create interest in the festival and help get everyone into the festival spirit.

The construction of a new State-of-the-Art Grenfell Medical Centre/Health Hub is continuing.

The construction which is one of a number of capital infrastructure projects Council has in progress will see a fit for purpose building including five consulting rooms, minor operations room, practice manager room, practice nurse room, medical meeting rooms, reception area, kitchen, storage facilities, office spaces and a dental services area with 2 consultation spaces developed. The Medical Centre will be of a very high standard and designed to serve the community well into the future. It will also include e-Health capacity with excellent digital integration facilitating collaboration and connectivity between the Health Hub, Grenfell MPS and the Orange Health Service.

This modern facility will be a ‘game changer’ in attracting and retaining General Practitioners (GPs) and facilitating the delivery of health services to the residents of the Weddin Shire for many years into the future.

Stage 1 of the replacement of the Trunk Main K water pipe which stretches 34kms from Goologong to Grenfell has been completed by Central Tablelands Water (CTW) which saw the construction of the 12.6km pipeline between McDonald’s Lane pump station and Grenfell North Reservoir.

Stage 2 construction which commenced on 5th March 2018 will see a further 7.6km of the project undertaken which is due for completion mid May 2018. Due to land use during the autumn and winter months along the pipeline route, it is likely that a third stage will be required in the 2018/2019 financial year to complete the replacement which will not prevent commissioning and operation of Stage 1 and 2 in 2018.

The replacement of the water main is a great initiative and is a project that CTW and in particular our local CTW representatives Cr Best and Cr Bembrick have been working very hard to bring to fruition for the benefit of residents.

The Lachlan Regional Transport Committee’s (LRTC) next meeting will be held at the Grenfell Bowling Club this Saturday the 19th May 2018 at 9.30am.

It has been quite a while since Grenfell has hosted a meeting and the Committee have advised that they are looking forward to holding the meeting in Grenfell once again to discuss the major transport issues affecting residents in rural areas.

Mayor Mark Liebich will be attending to formally welcome everybody with Councillors O’Byrne and Bembrick attending as Council delegates.

National Families Week will be held from Tuesday 15 May, coinciding with the United Nations International Day of Families, and will continue throughout the week until Monday 21 May, 2018.

The aim of National Families Week 2018 is to celebrate the vital role that families play in Australian society. The theme 'Stronger Families, Stronger Communities' has been embraced as an enduring theme for National Families Week as it encapsulates the important role families play as the central building blocks of our communities. Community wellbeing is enhanced by family wellbeing. National Families Week is a time to celebrate with your family, make contact with your extended family and friends, and share in the enjoyment of family activities within the wider community. Organisations, businesses and individuals are encouraged to celebrate National Families Week by planning and holding a National Families Week event. It can be a morning tea or something that is suitable.

Further information regarding the week is available on the following website: https://familiesaustralia.org.au/events/national-families-week/

The exhibition at the Grenfell Art Gallery is "Shared Observations " by local artists Nina Roderick, Allen Crowe and Kathleen McCue which opened Tuesday 17 April 2018 and is on display until 1 June 2018.
