COUNCIL NEWS 2 MAY 2018

The 2018 ANZAC commemoration was held in a very dignified and respectful manner at Memorial Park on Wednesday, 25th April 2018.

Mr John McGrath was the guest speaker at the ANZAC Service, delivering a very enlightening and informative address. It was a very good day which afforded residents and visitors the opportunity to remember and honour the service and sacrifice of many Australians who lost their lives in the conflicts.

The Grenfell RSL Sub Branch held a ‘Dining In’ night in the tradition of the Army on Saturday evening 28 April at the Grenfell Country Club.

The dinner took the place of the usual luncheon following the Anzac Day ceremony as many of the RSL members were involved in other activities and services in surrounding towns and villages on ANZAC Day.

Mr John McGrath was the guest speaker and again delivered a very informative address. The Deputy Prime Minister and Member for Riverina the Hon Michael McCormack MP also attended which was very much appreciated by the Grenfell RSL and those in attendance.

It was a terrific night which gave an insight into the Army way of life and certainly made us appreciate the many sacrifices made by those who have and still are serving our Country.

The Member for Cootamundra the Hon Steph Cooke MP recently announced that Council will receive grant funding of $44,727 to revitalise existing library facilities which is great news.

This funding includes a microform reader/printer, furniture and shelving which will allow a more flexible floorplan with more room for library programs.

Grants have been awarded to 33 local Councils across the state this year, providing significant public benefit and improving public buildings, spaces and information technology for communities across NSW.

Well done and congratulations to Councils Director Corporate Services Mr Lachlan Gibson, Librarian Erica Kearnes and the Library team on the successful grant funding application.

Council has recently been advised that the Grenfell NRMA Insurance Office will be closing as part of the closure of (77) offline Country Service Centres which is very disappointing particularly for our elderly residents.

Council at its April 2018 meeting resolved that the Mayor Cr Liebich, Cr Diprose and Mr Lindsay Ballard, representing the Grenfell branch of the Combined Pensioners and Superannuants, be authorised to make representations to Insurance Australia Group (IAG) to endeavour to maintain a face to face presence for the sale of NRMA Insurance products in Grenfell.

In this regard a meeting has been scheduled for Friday 11 May, 2018 in Grenfell with Council and NRMA representatives to discuss the issue and afford Council representatives the opportunity to make representations on behalf of our residents and NRMA representatives to explain their decision and how they will be working with their customers after the closure.

It should be noted that NRMA Motoring and Services activities will continue to be provided by Peter Mellon Motors post 30 June, 2018.

In better news, Member for Cootamundra the Hon Steph Cooke MP has announced that former Weddin Shire Councillor Mr Bill Atchison from Grenfell has been named one of 24 NSW finalists for the 2018 Rotary Emergency Services Community Awards which is a remarkable achievement.

Bill was chosen for his character and over 16 years outstanding service to the SES as a volunteer member and peer support member as well as 45 years work with the Ambulance Service.

Finalists for the awards come from the following emergency services agencies:

Fire & Rescue NSW; NSW Ambulance; NSW Rura Fire Service; NSW State Emergency Service; Marine Rescue NSW; and NSW Volunteer Rescue Association

Winners for each service, plus two special winners for NSW, and the young volunteer will be announced at an Awards Presentation Dinner, at the Bankstown Sports Club on June 1, 2018.

Family, friends, supporters and the general public are invited to attend the presentation dinner. Tickets can purchased at: www.RotaryESCawards.org.au

Good luck Bill!
