Gladstone Regional Council today allocated $11,800 in grants to support sport and active recreational events across the Gladstone Region.

Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said sporting clubs, community groups and businesses would benefit from funds through Round 1 of Council’s Regional Sport and Recreation Event Grant 2018-19.

“10 successful applicants will receive a grant of up to $3000 for a sport and active recreation event to be held between September and March within our region,” Councillor Burnett said.

“Events being hosted in Gladstone, Seventeen Seventy, Benaraby, Baffle Creek, Calliope and Tannum Sands will help draw attention to the Gladstone Region and attract competitors and visitors from outside of Gladstone.

“In effect, this grants program helps support our local businesses, boosts our local economy and assists clubs and groups to further develop opportunities to host and attract future events.”

Cr Burnett said the Round 1 grants would assist regional clubs to host a variety of high level events.

“Events range from a Special Olympics dual sports weekend to a regional dragon boat regatta, junior golf open championships and a family fishing festival,” he said.

2018-19 Regional Sport and Recreation Event Grant Program Round 1 recipients include: Special Olympics Gladstone for a Special Olympics ‘Beyond Ordinary’ Dual Sports Weekend; Gladstone Ladies Bowls Club Inc for Gladstone Triples; 1770 Sailing Club Inc for an R4 Greater Wide Bay Dragon Boat Regatta; Central Qld Drag Racing Association for the Summit QLD Championships Eighth Mile; Gladstone Field Archers Inc for a 3DAAA Sanctioned Event, Calliope Community and Sports Park Association for Calliope Super 6’s (soccer); Baffle Creek Community Inc for the Baffle Creek Family Fishing Festival; BITS Junior Golf Club Inc for the BITS Junior Golf Open Championships; Gladstone Swimming Club Inc for the Liquid Energy Swimming Meet; Gladstone Junior Basketball Association for the 2018-19 Central Districts Juniors Carnival.
