Gladstone Regional Council advises residents that the section of Goondoon Street extending from Tank Street to Herbert Street, Gladstone, will temporarily close to vehicles heavier than five tonnes from Monday (Sept 3).

This is being implemented as a precautionary measure to enable Council to investigate the cause of several substructure anomalies that have been identified at the location.

Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said the move was precautionary while investigation is under way to understand the cause of the substructure anomalies and to conduct any necessary remedial works.

“Radar scanning of the location has identified several anomalies in the substructure which have expanded in dimension and will require remedial work to restore them to the desired strength,” Councillor Burnett said.

“The road is considered safe for standard family and four-wheel-drive vehicles to use and the five-tonne limit has been implemented purely as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of drivers and passengers in heavy vehicles.

“Once our investigation is complete, Council’s roads and water services crews will conduct the repair work as soon as possible to ensure it is completed ahead of the wet season.”

Council has commenced discussions with Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School and Buslink to arrange alternative bus pick up and drop off points for students and alternative public bus service routes, and will liaise with affected businesses, organisations and other stakeholders to ensure the repair works are as non-intrusive as possible.

Signage will be in place throughout the works to advise that only vehicles below the five-tonne weight threshold enter the area.

Once the investigation has been finalised and a repair methodology determined, works will commence to rectify the substructure concerns.

Council thanks the public for its patience while the repair works are in progress and apologises for any inconvenience caused.
