The Santos Women’s Tour Down Under will return to the Barossa in 2019 with a stage start in Nuriootpa for the very first time.
The women's peloton will race across the Barossa from Nuriootpa to Menglers Hill (116.7km) on 11 January.
The race provides numerous opportunities for spectators to witness world class female athletes with two sprints through the main street of Angaston and the Subaru Queen of the Mountain climb in Eden Valley before the gruelling finish atop Mengler Hill.
Kimberley Conte, Race Director, Santos Women’s Tour Down Under is thrilled that Stage 2 of the race has a start and finish location in the Barossa region.
“We will be starting the race for the first time in Nuriootpa as the course winds its way through the picturesque location of Seppeltsfield,” said Kimberley.
“This stage will feature two sprints, both in Angaston which we expect to be hotly contested but the real test for the riders will be the grueling climb to the finish up Mengler Hill.
“We expect strong community support and know the Barossa towns will roll out the red carpet to make the riders feel welcome.”
Mayor Bob Sloane is thrilled to welcome the Santos Women’s Tour Down Under back to the Barossa again.
“The women’s tour and the calibre of competitors continues to strengthen year after year making it a great opportunity for our community to see some of the world’s best athletes right here in our own backyard,” he said.
“The Santos Women’s Tour is also a great precursor to the men’s race which comes back to the Barossa the following week with Stage 2 on the Wednesday.
“Both events provide a wonderful opportunity to showcase our region’s premium wine, food and tourism experiences.”
Mayor Sloane said Council is already working with local community groups to celebrate the women’s race with activities during the race stage.
