Act-Belong-Commit Schools Take pART Competition

Schools Take pART encourages young people to express themselves through art and design in public spaces with the objective of enhancing streetscapes and buildings while respecting the integrity of the community and property owners.

The City included an educational component at the beginning of the school workshops to discuss the consequences of illegal tagging and painting in the community. This helped students understand the difference between illegal graffiti activity, which defaces community infrastructure, and accepted urban art projects that promote a positive message within the community.

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said that Schools Take pART played a positive role in encouraging young people to work with the community to enhance the visual amenity of the City and at the same time develop their artistic flair. The theme selected for the competition this year centres around the visual interpretation of positive mental health related to the theme “Believe”.

“Urban art has become a valuable medium when it comes to enhancing urban buildings and streetscapes. It is widely accepted around the world for its artistic merit,” Mayor Sammels said. “The City is delighted with the artwork that has been created by local students for this competition.” Kolbe College students’ mural on the Sterling Office National building won the secondary school category, and Charthouse students won the primary school category for their artwork on a wall at the Rockingham Centre 

The art groups from the winning schools worked with local artists to paint their winning designs as permanent murals on the walls of the respective buildings.
