City and Police Combine To Make It Tougher On Crooks

The City’s “Making it Tougher on Crooks -- Community Safety Starts with You” campaign is a joint initiative between the City and the three police stations servicing the City of Rockingham, Kwinana and Mandurah. The WA Police Community Engagement Division is also playing a pivotal role.
Cr Sammels has urged community members to be vigilant and report suspicious activities to police during the four-month crime fighting initiative, from December through to the end of March.
“The summer holiday period poses greater risks for home owners and business, as well for the safety of individuals, so it’s a time when we must all work together to make things tougher on crooks,” Cr Sammels said.
“The Australian Institute of Criminology has proved that campaigns involving police and local communities are effective in making life hard for criminals, but it is up to all of us to play a part. Most of the measures the community needs to take require simple common sense – locking homes and vehicles, and not leaving valuable items visible to people outside.
“If we all work together, look out for each other and link into our local police, we will be safer and crooks will find the going much tougher.”
There are some simple ways to make life tougher for crooks: • Remove valuable items from parked cars • Keep doors and windows locked and garage doors closed, even when at home • Do not leave phones or bags unattended in public places • Be wary of anybody who tries to distract you • Report suspicious people or activities to police as a matter of urgency • Keep a lookout for neighbours and friends • Get to know your neighbours better – join community safety organisation Neighbours Unite ([email protected]) or phone Community Safety on 9528 0333
The program is receiving strong promotional support from radio stations CoastFM and 6mm, as partners in the initiative, providing live crosses, in-studio promotion and interviews. United Cinemas is also a partner and is providing ongoing promotion during movie screenings.
