Castaways Entries Now Open

Now in their 10th year, the awards combine the theme of recycling and environmental awareness with the creative re-use of materials and innovative sculpture.    Artists are asked to submit entries for the 2017 awards by 2 June 2017. Schools entries close on 17 July 2017. Curated by Lyn DiCiero, artworks in the unique outdoor exhibition must have a recycled component.   City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said the awards had become a major art competition for the region which attracted entries from some very accomplished artists from around the country.   “The event highlights the City’s strong commitment to recycling and its growing reputation as a centre of cultural activity,” Mayor Sammels said. “Whether it is through ingenuity, social or environmental comment or sheer aesthetics, visitors always enjoy a colourful and striking array of sculptures which transform our most popular beach into an outdoor gallery for the week.” Mayor Sammels said last year’s decision to move the Castaways Sculpture Awards from May to October to make the most of the warmer weather had been well received.   “We had record crowds attend last year’s event which provides great exposure for the artists involved,” Mayor Sammels said. “We look forward to another spectacular exhibition this year.”   For more information contact the Community Development Officer (Arts and Culture) on 9528 0333 or email [email protected].
