Clifford St and Broken Head Road intersection improvements on the way

Published on 04 September 2018

In response to community concerns about the safety of the Clifford Street and Broken Head Road intersection at Suffolk Park, Council will be doing road works to improve visibility and traffic flow.

The road works, which will take place on 10-11 September (weather permitting) will include:

the removal of the left turn lane from Broken Head Road into Clifford Street; a new traffic island and line marking on Broken Head Road; moving the bus and taxi zone on Clifford Street, 50m south (towards the beach) to ease congestion and improve the right turn from Clifford Street into Broken Head Road towards Byron Bay.

If the weather is fine the work on the 10 September will take place at night, starting at 7pm.

“Because this intersection is so busy some of this work needs to be done at night to minimise disruption to local residents,” Phil Holloway, Byron Shire Council’s Director Infrastructure Services, said.

“There will be some low-level noise during the night works and residents have been informed about this.

“Once these works are complete, traffic will have more room when turning right out of Clifford Street into a merging lane on Broken Head Road, which will improve traffic safety and flow,” Mr Holloway said.

There will be short term delays for people during the road works and Council is asking people to factor this into their daily/nightly commute.
