2017 Western Downs Regional Artists’ Exhibition first prize winner Helen Dennis and Mayor Paul McVeigh with her winning artwork, Fabulous Fascinators.
Tone, texture and technique will be on show in Chinchilla with the opening of the 2018 Western Downs Regional Artists’ Exhibition at Lapunyah Art Gallery.
Now in its fifth year, the Exhibition’s theme of 50 Shades… has challenged local artists to explore the values of light and shade in their subjects.
Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire said that the Western Downs Regional Artists Exhibition is a great way to share and celebrate the work of our local artists.
“Each year the committees from Lapunyah Art Gallery, Chinchilla, Dogwood Crossing, Miles and Gallery 107 @ Dalby come together to plan the exhibition,” she said.
“This year’s theme of 50 Shades… is almost limitless — I’m excited to see how our local artists have interpreted it through photography, etching and even mosaic.
“The talent we have in the visual arts space in the region is special, so I know the judge will have a tough job.”
“Our art scene is thriving and our galleries are reflecting this renewed interest, so I’m looking forward to attending the exhibition.”
Helen Dennis, a contemporary Chinchilla artist, was awarded first prize at last years On Show exhibition hosted by Gallery 107 @ Dalby.
“As a regional artist, to be awarded first prize by both nationally and internationally-acclaimed judges is a genuine recognition of my work.
“The contemporary art scene and technique in the region is on-par with what’s happening in the wider arts community.”
In her role as the Director of Lapunyah Art Gallery, Mrs. Dennis also assists in overseeing the submissions. “Lapunyah has a strong tradition of bringing a variety of artworks to the gallery.
“With the arts scene in the Western Downs really well supported, there’s been a vast array of art styles to choose from.
“Whether it’s realism, post-impressionism or even pop art that you’re after, the exhibition isn’t all contemporary work — there’s something for everyone to appreciate.”
The 2018 Western Downs Regional Artists’ Exhibition 50 Shades… opening night will be held on Saturday 22 September from 5.30pm at Lapunyah Art Gallery, Chinchilla, featuring musical entertainment from The Signy Arnason Quartet as a part of Council’s Groovin into Town series. The exhibition runs from Monday 24 September until Wednesday 24 October 2018.
