Cr Carolyn Tillman and Council’s Parks and Open Spaces teams are excited for the latest round of Adopt a Street Tree.
After so much positive feedback from the Western Downs community, Council’s popular Adopt a Street Tree program is again open for registrations.
Spokesperson for Parks, Open Spaces and Cemeteries Councillor Carolyn Tillman said that Round Three of the program has been long-awaited by the community.
“We’ve had such an overwhelming response to Adopt a Street Tree — whether it’s been phone calls to our Customer Contact Centres, comments left on our social media pages or compliments to our Parks and Open Spaces teams, our community has really embraced the program,” she said.
“We have even had instances of families moving house and requesting more trees be planted at their new address.
“For this latest round we want to target our smaller communities such as Kogan, Brigalow and The Gums. The schools have already got involved, so we want to extend the invitation to residents living in these towns also.”
With the excitement around the opening of Round Three, Council’s Parks and Open Spaces Coordinator Matthew Robertson isn’t forgetting about the first Street Trees planted around the region.
“With registrations first opening in June 2017, our original Street Trees are now well-established, year-old plants,” he said.
“With the change of season into Spring, now is the perfect time to check up on your trees.”
Robbo’s Street Tree Tips
Now that we are heading into hotter months, continue to give your trees the equivalent of two buckets of water per week (with an additional deep water every two to three weeks). It’s important to top up the mulch around the base of the tree to help keep the moisture in, but avoid mulching too close to the trunk. Remember not to pile up grass clippings at the base of the tree or use herbicides to spray for weeds, as it may be detrimental to the health of your Street Tree. Don’t hesitate to contact Council if you’re concerned about your trees and need advice.Registrations for Round Three of the Adopt a Street Tree program are now open and will close on Thursday 31 January 2019.
