New off-leash dog park opens with special recognition of local animal lover

Last Saturday, Fairfield City Mayor Frank Carbone, officially opened the park with the unveiling of a plaque to recognise the outstanding voluntary efforts of Bonnyrigg resident Andy Snook.

Mayor Carbone said the plaque in Mr Snook’s honour at Fairfield City’s newest off-leash dog park was a fitting tribute.

“For many years Mr Snook has spent his free time walking the local streets looking for lost dogs, scanning their microchips and caring for the dog until the owner is found,” Mayor Carbone said.

“Andy has never asked for help or recognition for his work, which has reunited hundreds of loved pets with their families. He is a true example of a quiet achiever who is focused on helping others.

“As a highly respected local animal lover, a plaque is an ideal way to give permanent recognition to Mr Snook’s long-term contribution to the community.”

“It is important to appreciate and respect those community members that truly embody our City’s spirit and give tirelessly to the Fairfield community with no expectation of reward.”

Mayor Carbone said adding dog off-leash areas is a priority for Council giving local residents a dedicated space to exercise their dogs.

“Exercise is essential to a dog’s wellbeing and happiness, as well as of course to the health and well being of dog owners!” Mayor Carbone said.

The Prout Park off-leash dog park is fully fenced and features two separate areas for smaller and larger dogs, water bowls and seating.

“Off-leash parks allows our four legged friends to exercise and socialise, and allows owners to enjoy watching their dogs enjoy running around,” Mayor Carbone said.

“Off-leash parks are especially important for dog owners who live in small units or have backyards that don’t allow dogs to roam free.

“The dog parks are also another way Council is supporting healthy living in our City - to encourage residents to get out and about.”
