Gladstone City Library will acknowledge Australian Reading Hour tomorrow (Thursday, Sep 20) hosting a Reading and Pizza event from 6pm to 7pm.
Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said residents of all ages were invited to take part in the night which encouraged residents to rediscover, or discover the benefits of reading, by setting aside one hour to read a book.
“Council is pleased to annually support this campaign, which is supported by the Australian Library and Information Association and national literary groups,” Councillor Burnett said.
“Our Gladstone City Library is the ideal place to spend Australian Reading Hour with patrons able to relax in comfortable areas, browse through library resources and enjoy some pizza during the event.”
Studies have shown that reading is highly beneficial for children and adults, can increase literacy and numeracy skills, and can relieve stress more quickly than listening to music, going for a walk or having a cup of tea.
“Gladstone City Library has thousands of items to keep patrons entertained, ranging from children’s books to teen and adult fiction, non-fiction, large print books and magazines,” Cr Burnett said.
“This is an ideal opportunity for residents to enjoy our library facility, take some time out, learn new facts, or generally just relax and leisurely browse through a book.
“Our extensive library and elibrary collection caters to all different interests with residents offered a wide selection of resources to read or borrow.”
Bookings to attend the library’s Reading and Pizza event are required and can be made by phoning Gladstone City Library on 4976 6400 or email [email protected]
