Proposed changes to bin services
Bayside City Council 20 Sep 2018

Council is seeking feedback on proposed changes to waste and recycling services aimed at reducing the waste Bayside households send to landfill.

A new draft Recycling and Waste Strategy was developed following consultation with more than 1800 residents earlier this year.

Key changes proposed in the draft Strategy include putting food waste in the red lid garden waste bin from 1 July 2019.

Bayside Mayor Cr Laurence Evans said recycling food waste is the single biggest step we can take to reduce the environmental and financial cost of disposing waste to landfill.

“Food waste fills up nearly half our garbage bins. If we can reduce and recycle our food waste, we will be well on our way to reducing the amount of waste we send to landfill,” he said.

The food organics service is proposed to be rolled out to all Bayside households, including those who do not already have a red lid garden waste bin.

The plan involves providing red lid garden waste bins to residents who don’t already have one for a one-off charge of $100.20*. This is the same cost currently paid by residents who already use the garden waste collection service.

Down the track, the frequency of bin collections could also change if the volume of waste in the garbage bin is reduced by residents recycling their food waste.

Current collection contracts expire in 2022/23. This would provide the opportunity to change collection of the red lid bin containing garden and food waste to weekly and the landfill bin to fortnightly.

Feedback closes 5pm, 12 October 2018.
