20 September 2018

The Kingston Seniors Festival returns for its eleventh year this October.

This year’s festival theme is ‘Get Social’ and will feature a month-long program of free and low-cost events and activities for seniors.

Kingston Mayor Steve Staikos said that this year’s program includes more than 100 activities and workshops which provide opportunities for older people to leave the house, pick up a new skill, have fun and meet others.

“From Ballroom Dancing and Table Tennis to trivia and Agatha Christie radio plays, this festival caters to all levels of mobility, and will provide enriching experiences and opportunities to develop new friendships,” said Cr Staikos.

Activities include, but is not limited to:

Yoga for seniors – Breath, Bend and Stretch A ‘Downsizing Masterclass’  Brain Fitness for Ageing Minds Journey through the world of tea A ‘Non-Boring Family History Day/Memoir Workshop’

The festival is also a proud celebration of the diversity of the City of Kingston’s community.

“Kingston is home to a multicultural community, with residents from more than 150 countries, who speak 120 languages and follow more than 28 different faiths,” said Cr Staikos.

“We are delighted to bring our community a Seniors Festival which includes a Greek, Italian and Turkish Culture Day, an indigenous workshop and a Chinese Lantern Festival.”

Council will also host a free information session for community members aged over 65 to discuss ongoing transport options at Westall Community Hub on Thursday 11 October at 11am.

“We are pleased to launch our new transport service for residents aged over 65, which enable local seniors to continue taking part in social activities, irrespective of their access to a car or mobility,” said Cr Staikos.

“This is just one of many informative sessions which are aimed at empowering older residents.”
