Help celebrate the new Bowen Water Tank mural

The community is invited to attend a free sausage sizzle and will be able to walk around the base of the water tanks on Friday 28 September, from 10am to noon, in a rare opportunity to view the detailed paintings up-close.

Many Bowen residents and local school children picked up a paint brush and joined in working on the mural over the last few months, and their colourful designs can be seen around the base of the tanks.

Mayor Andrew Willcox said he was impressed by the high level of interest and positive feedback received from the community during the murals work.

“We have been blown away by the enthusiasm shown by the locals for the new murals and I’d like to thank all those who got involved and helped paint,” he said.

“We are elated with the quality of the final outcome and I am confident the murals will become an iconic part of Bowen’s artistic heritage.

“Our opening event will include a free sausage sizzle courtesy of the Bowen PCYC, face painting by the R.U.B.Y Crew and the Coffee Cruiser Van, so come along and join in the fun,” he said.

Chairman of Bowen Tourism and Business, Jonathan Freeman is thrilled with the final murals on the Bowen water tanks.

“The community consultation provided strong concepts for the murals and the result truly demonstrates the diversity of experiences on offer in Bowen,” Mr Freeman said.

“From our rich horticultural industry to our amazing natural environment, beautiful sea life and link to the past, the murals reflect exactly what our community values about our town.

“Our visitors have also commented on the quality of the artwork and the way the stories told develop as they drive into and around Bowen”.

“We’d like to thank Whitsunday Regional Council for the opportunity to work together on this important project for Bowen,” Mr Freeman said.

The mural was recently completed by artists from Phantast Cultural Music and Arts Association, after an extensive consultation and design process with the community.

This project has been made possible with a Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grant to Bowen Tourism and Business.

The RADF is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Whitsunday Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.
