Councillor Dagg elected Deputy Mayor

  Congratulations to Councillor Melanie Dagg, who was elected to the positon of Deputy Mayor of Cessnock City Council for the term commencing in October.  

Council’s General Manager Stephen Glen was the returning officer for the election and declared Councillor Dagg the successful candidate after an open ballot during Wednesday’s council meeting.  

Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent congratulated Councillor Dagg and thanked Deputy Mayor, Councillor Anthony Burke for his service to the community during the last year.  

“Councillor Burke has done an outstanding job at representing Council at numerous community events. He’s a fantastic orator making him a great representative for Council and importantly a committed advocate of his community, making him a wonderful community representative.”  

Newly elected Deputy Mayor, Cr Dagg grew up in Cessnock, attending West Cessnock Public School, Mount View High School and later St Marys in Maitland and has recently returned to studying law by correspondence as a mature-aged student.   Melanie now lives in Branxton with her husband Josh and their two gorgeous girls Amelia and Eliza. She is a keen tennis player, although does not have as much time to hit the court between work, study, family life and her work in the community.  

 Cr Dagg serves as a member of the Hunter Water Consultative Committee, the Association of Mining Related Councils and is Council’s representative on the Mines Subsidence Board. She has been heavily involved with a number of community and sporting groups, including serving as the Secretary and Treasurer for the Greta-Branxton Cricket Club for six years and is a member of Branxton Lions. She has always had a keen interest in social justice but it was her desire to serve her community that prompted her to run for Council.  

As a young mum, Cr Dagg is focused on creating a more liveable, healthy and connected community for every family in the Cessnock Local Government Area (LGA) to enjoy. She has a keen interest in Council’s governance and transparency, in the promotion of jobs through economic development and ensuring the villages throughout the area aren’t overlooked.  

Cr Dagg looks forward to taking on this extra responsibility.
