Come fly with us at Cessnock Library

Cessnock residents have always been intrigued by the romance of flying and when pioneer Australian aviator Bert Hinkler landed in the middle of Cessnock racecourse he was met with a rock star welcome.  

Cessnock City Library is inviting residents to relive some of these stories and memories on Thursday 20 September from 5.30pm to 6.30pm. Join Cessnock City Council’s Local Historian and Archivist, Kimberly O'Sullivan for a night of bubbles and nibbles.  

The celebration of our incredible flying stories not only looks at Bert Hinkler’s visit in June 1928, as part of his ‘Tour of Triumph’ around Australia, but also the day Cessnock Airport was opened.

The Newcastle Morning Herald described the 3 August 1935 as ‘one of the most spectacular in the history of the district.'   

The following year the grand Cessnock Air Pageant was held, with the organiser making sure everyone knew it was on flying over Cessnock dropping event leaflets into the town below.  

Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent said it’s a very fitting time for the event as it’s 81 years since the first Cessnock Air Pageant and next weekend is the inaugural AirVenture Australia Airshow.  

“We extend a warm welcome to locals and those visiting to attend this free event that will interest aviation lovers and history enthusiasts.”
