Wonderful Wattle exhibition

Wattle Day is on 1 September and to celebrate this uniquely Australian day, Cessnock Library will host a Wonderful Wattle exhibition in the foyer from 1 to 20 September 2018.  

The exhibition also falls within History Week, so it will also cover the history of Wattle Day, both locally and nationally, as it was once a major Australian celebration and public holiday.  

What many might not know is that Golden Wattle (acacia pycnantha) is our national floral emblem and like Australian people themselves, it has great diversity with more than 750 species!  

There are also significant local history stories about Wattle Day celebrations in Cessnock, Kurri Kurri and Wollombi schools where students would take to the bush, collect wattle and crown a Wattle King and Queen. In 1955, the first annual Cessnock Wattle Day ball was held in Lyceum Hall and was a great success, attracting almost 300 people.  

Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent encourages the local community to visit Cessnock Library to check out the Wonderful Wattle exhibition during September.  

“This timely wattle themed exhibition also marks the beginning of spring and there will be lots of glorious wattles coming into bloom throughout our local government area!”
