On September 19, Miners, families, community groups and unions will come together to honour the memory of miners who have lost their lives in Queensland's mines.
The annual event coincides with the anniversary of Queensland’s worst mining disaster at Mount Mulligan, where 75 miners were killed in 1921.
The Miners Memorial Day Service will be held in Charters Towers this year and will highlight the importance of the safety and health of all miners.
“We are honoured to host this year’s Miners Memorial Day service.” said Mayor Liz Schmidt. “In our almost 150 years of mining, many early miners suffered work-related illnesses and perished in mining accidents.
“Although modern techniques and technology have improved, sadly miners still pay the ultimate price.
“I want to encourage our community to take part in the service this year and honour the memory of miners.”
The Miners Memorial Day service is a free community event and open to anyone who would like to attend.
Former Charters Towers local and Australian Cricketer Andrew 'Roy' Symonds will MC the Service.
