Civic Design Awards nominations now open

The Town of Claremont is currently seeking nominations for its 2018 Civic Design Awards. The Awards promote Claremont’s rich heritage through acknowledging projects which conserve, maintain and adapt heritage places.   Mayor Barker said that preserving the heritage of our local community was of great importance to Council. “Our heritage buildings and places not only add character and distinctiveness to the local area but provide our community with a sense of history,” Mayor Barker said.  

“In our local community, Council has retained and upgraded heritage places such as the Freshwater Bay Museum, formally the Freshwater Bay School established in 1862; the Claremont Community Hub and Library, formally the Methodist Church; and the former Station Master’s House for community use.”

Claremont Council are currently seeking submissions from home owners, architects and builders in the Town of Claremont with properties that showcase best practice in heritage conservation and design.

The bi-annual awards are designed to recognise the efforts of individuals who have gone out of their way to conserve and enhance the heritage value of their local streets.

“As a community we share the responsibility to protect and enhance the Town’s heritage for future generations,” Mayor Barker said.   

“These awards recognise excellence and inspire better design by promoting community awareness and acknowledging those owners, architects and designers who enhance the distinctive character of the Town.”

Categories include additions to heritage places that complement and enhance the original building, projects that utilise excellent conservation techniques and practices to preserve the heritage value of a place as well as new buildings or alterations to non-heritage buildings that make a positive contribution to a heritage streetscape. There is also a category for special projects that make a particular effort to ensure the Town’s heritage is conserved and enhanced.

Projects should have commenced and completed in the 24 months prior to competition deadline on 8 May 2018. Winners will be announced at a function held at the Council’s Administration building on 29 June 2018. As a recognition of their achievement, winners will be granted a rate rebate. Entries will be showcased during the function.
