Claremont on the Park wins National Award for Planning Excellence

Claremont on the Park, a joint project with Landcorp, TPG + Place and Town of Claremont, was awarded Best Planning Ideas – Small Project at the Planning Institute of Australia’s 2018 national awards last week.   Claremont on the Park is a project that encompasses residential, commercial and retail precincts within the fringes of historical Claremont sites such as Claremont Oval and the 135 year-old station precinct.   Town of Claremont Mayor Jock Barker said the project helped to connect these landmarks with the town centre, extending Claremont across the railway line.   “Claremont on the Park is a magnificent addition to our town, linking our historical landmarks such as the train station precinct and Goods Shed as well as the beloved home of the Claremont Tigers to our retail strip to create a reinvigorated space for our community.”     The development will offer relaxed apartment living around the Claremont Football Oval, accompanied by retail and commercial spaces closer to the train station.   The judges comments were as follows; “Claremont on the Park responds innovatively to multiple challenges associated with delivering quality, sustainable high density living in an older, well-established Perth suburb. The project represents a prime transit-orientated opportunity and the ability to provide a physical, social and economic connection to the Claremont Town Centre. The site, located on the northern side of the Perth to Fremantle rail line, and adjacent to the Claremont railway station, incorporates an underutilised rail reserve, an aging football oval with contaminated embankments and dilapidated stands, the council depot, and the local PCYC. “The creation of Claremont on the Park has made a significant contribution to addressing the Town of Claremont’s infill housing targets in an area which is strongly resistant to change. It has re-visioned the fringes of the historical Claremont Oval, the home of Australian Rules Football in the area since 1927, once fenced and closed off to the public, as a vibrant medium density residential, commercial and retail precinct re-energising the 135-year-old station precinct. The abandoned Claremont Goods Shed has been reborn into a well-used and interactive cultural and community facility, through a pioneering approach to community engagement and creative place making. “Claremont on the Park has been carefully planned to integrate with its surrounds, both physically and socially, and give back to the community. A decade or more of consultation has enriched the project, and deepened public commitment to the conservation of Claremont’s heritage. The use of the fundamental design principles of balanced and mixed land uses, permeability, and retention of character created a strong focus on the provision of amenity for residents and the surrounding community.”

The Best Planning Ideas – Small Project is awarded to recognise outstanding planning ideas for a project that is limited to a site, local place or neighbourhood. Commendations were provided to Media/GIS Land Division Tool by Adelaide Hills Council (SA) and Logis Design Guidelines and Design Review by Alexander Urbanism Development Victoria, Plus Architecture (VIC).
