Plastic Free July takes place in Claremont

Plastic Free July began at the Western Metropolitan Regional Council in 2011 with 40 participants. The award-winning campaign was developed to encourage individuals, organisations, businesses and communities to reduce the single-use plastic they use in July.

Last year, Plastic Free July became an independent organisation in order to broaden their reach with now more than two million people taking part in over 150 countries.

Western Metropolitan Regional Council’s Christine Parfitt will be presenting at Claremont Community Hub and Library, discussing the history of plastic and its impact on the environment. She will showcase a number of local initiatives that are working to reduce plastics entering our oceans and will inspire participants to take their own actions to become part of a movement creating lasting change.

“My background is in marine science and I have extensive knowledge of the plastic problem both in Australia and overseas especially from a marine perspective,” Ms Parfitt said. “I’m really excited to be able to share the history of plastics, its impacts on the environment and highlight some great initiatives, including plastic free July, that are in this space.”

Town of Claremont Mayor Jock Barker said the Town had a strong focus on environmental sustainability with a new public recycling bin trial commencing in the Claremont Town Centre as well as other initiatives on the horizon.

“There are many ways we can all contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle,” Mayor Barker said. “Small, simple changes can make a big difference and taking part in initiatives such as Plastic Free July is a fantastic first step.”
