GST on online purchases gets thumbs up from Claremont Mayor

Town of Claremont Mayor Jock Barker is excited to see new legislation changes come into effect, with GST being introduced for all overseas online purchases, and urges the broader community to continue to buy local.   From 1 July 2018, GST will apply to all overseas online purchases. Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison last year introduced the legislation to create a fairer tax system, support small business and to establish a level playing field for domestic retailers.   Mayor Barker said it was now more important than ever to assist bricks and mortar retailing.   “The Town of Claremont really values its local small businesses and the many benefits they bring to the community including creating employment opportunities, providing goods and services and building a vibrant economy,” Mayor Barker said.   “The introduction for GST tax to be applied to all overseas online purchases is a step in the right direction from the Federal Government in supporting our small business community.”   “I hope Australia see the benefits in moves like this and understands that the new legislation helps to level out the playing field for the smaller players.”   Last week, online retail giant Amazon announced a block for all Australian shoppers to their website due to the new GST rules.

Based on last year’s sales figures on overseas online purchases, the new legislation would bring in more than $450 million to the Australian economy.   Back To News Stories
