Claremont Art Award & Exhibition starts this week

With submissions from artists from across Perth and Western Australia, more than 65 pieces have been selected for exhibition at Town of Claremont Council Chambers and Administration Building from 11 to 25 August 2018.

Town of Claremont Mayor Jock Barker said this year’s selection panel had a hard time selecting the exhibited pieces from all the entrants due to the high calibre of works.

“I’ve have had a sneak preview of some of the artworks and sculptures that will be on display and they are very impressive,” Mayor Barker said. “I’m looking forward to seeing the full exhibition.”

The 2017 winner, sculptor Yuko Takahashi will have another piece in this year’s awards as will several other artists from previous years.

Mayor Barker said it was great to see a diverse range of local talent in the exhibition.

“We have artists exhibiting their pieces from all over Western Australia,” Mayor Barker said. “However, it’s fantastic to see such a huge group of local artists from our very own suburbs and also neighbouring councils.  It is also great opportunity for to purchase good quality artwork that has local flavour.”

Nedlands based artist Brendan Lewis will be exhibiting for the second time in these awards. He is a young self-taught artist who has been gaining momentum in the Perth scene with his watercolour portraiture.   Mr Lewis said his piece, entitled ‘Astro-Boy’, was a portrait of his little brother Isaac, based on a photo before he went in to surgery.   “In 2017 my little brother was diagnosed with AD-HD and this creates difficulties socialising with people because of their lack of ability to understand and empathise with his condition,” Mr Lewis said. “Like Astro-Boy, whilst he’s treated at times like an android, his ability to experience and express human emotions is greater than most humans he interacts with.”   “I wanted this piece to illustrate the love I have for my brother in his ability to express this magical energy as well as being particularly endearing in moments before his operation.”

Artists have the opportunity to win part of a $10,000 prize pool as well as have their artworks on sale for the community to purchase. The winning artwork will become part of the Town of Claremont’s art collection and will be on permanent display at the Town.   Back To News Stories
