Work has begun on new LED lighting for a field at the popular King George V sports fields, Port Kembla.
Council received $321,500 for the project from round two of the Port Kembla Community Investment Fund.
“With more pressure on our sports fields, installing lighting is one way we can help to increase use of these popular fields,’’ said Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM. “New lighting at existing sports grounds provides greater opportunities for sporting clubs to train and play and the lighting will also encourage greater participation in community sporting events.
“With projects such as new sports field lighting we are seeing changes which are directly helping our local community. This is one of the great benefits of the Port Kembla Community Investment Fund.”
The LED lighting will include six new 21-metre high poles with each containing three LED lights. The energy efficient lighting will help to reduce lighting pollution and are more durable and low maintenance than conventional lighting. They also meet Australian Standards for lighting sports activities.
Member for Kiama and Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra Gareth Ward said: “I am very pleased to support this project to upgrade the popular King George V sports field in Port Kembla, under the NSW Government’s Port Kembla Community Investment Fund, which I fought hard to secure,” Mr Ward said. “I also recently announced a record $4 million boost for Round Three of the PKCIF which will fund innovative initiatives which will help to improve local amenities and improve the attractiveness of our region.
“This is a massive lift in funding, with this year’s pool greater than the total amount available over the past two years combined. The funding will unlock more dollars for sports precinct upgrades, community facilities like King George V Oval and improvements for cultural, heritage and environment sites.
“I’m so proud of this program which contributes to making Port Kembla a vibrant, exciting place that people living locally can be proud to call home,” Mr Ward said.
The lighting will have wireless control so that Council will be able to switch off the lighting when not required. They will also include dimming controls so that Council can control the brightness of lighting depending on the needs of the community group using the fields.
Council expects the works to be completed by the end of November, weather permitting. Works are expected to take 8 to 10 weeks to complete and are commencing in September 2018.
