Council removes damaged boats from Whitsunday waters

Abandoned marine vessels damaged by Tropical Cyclone Debbie will be removed from the Whitsundays over the next few months, after Council received funding to clean up the region’s waterways.
Council will be undertaking eligible works funded under the joint Commonwealth-State Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).
Some of the key areas where damaged boats will be cleaned up include Shute Harbour and Muddy Bay near Airlie Beach.
The works have begun and are expected to be completed by early November 2018.
Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Andrew Willcox said the much-needed funding would make a huge difference to locals and visitors out on the water.
“Removing the last of the wreckage and debris caused by Cyclone Debbie will make our pristine natural environment really shine again,” he said.
“While we have taken huge strides to move past last year’s event, the reality is we are still cleaning up and restoring our beautiful region.
“The Whitsundays is internationally recognised for its spectacular waterways and 74 islands, and we want our visitors and residents to experience the region at its best.”
