Mayor Renee McLennan, Town of Bassendean hasn’t decided to update her wardrobe with this funky jacket for nothing. It’s being worn all in the name of a good cause coming to Bassendean this October; Garage Sale Trail.
The colourful creation Mayor McLennan is wearing has been made from repurposed clothing and fabric from designer Julie Paterson of ScrapClothFabric.
“We know that at most garage sales in our community often the largest number of items being sold is clothing”, said Cr McLennan.
Clothing, fast fashion, having more than you know what to do with is a big problem for Australians – they buy 27kgs of new textiles each year and discard 23kgs to landfill.
Fast fashion is driving the purchase of clothing that is often discarded after two or three wears causing considerable problems in landfills. Two-thirds of the items sent to landfill are manmade synthetic fibres that won’t break down.
“I’m wearing this fantastic blazer today to encourage everyone in Bassendean to become a reuse Trail Blazer with me in when Garage Sale Trail comes to town on October 20 & 21” said Cr McLennan.
“If you love the jacket Renee is wearing, we just know you’ll be able to find something just as incredible if you hit the Trail to your local sales this October” said Darryl Nichols, Co-Founder, Garage Sale Trail.
“We also want to see everyone selling all those old clothes and giving them a new life so they don’t end up in landfill” said Nichols.
Anyone in the community can get involved if they have clothing or other items to sell by hosting a sale or shopping the Trail at www.garagesaletrail.com.au/councils/Town-of-Bassendean – registration is free.
