City secures another major sports event – post GC2018

The 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games continues to deliver major legacy benefits for our city – with 700 athletes and their supporters about to arrive.

The Australian Transplant Games will be held across a range of City venues – from this weekend until 6 October.

“The Games were always about creating a platform that allows us to secure legacy opportunities for our city over the coming years,’’ said Mayor Tom Tate.

“Hosting events of this calibre boosts our reputation internationally and provides financial support for businesses right across the city. Many of these athletes and their friends will stay on to enjoy everything the coast has to offer. 

“As Mayor, I welcome the athletes, officials and supporters to the Gold Coast and wish you success over the week-long carnival.’’

The Games include:

700 athletes;229 adult transplant recipients in the mix;28 youth transplant recipients;260 recipient supporters also competing;20 competitive events including swimming, road race, athletics, triathlon; cycling, darts, golf, lawn bowls, pétanque (bocce), volleyball, ten pin bowling, tennis, table tennis, croquet, badminton and board games; andcompetitors from all Australian states and territories as well as New Zealand, Thailand, Germany and the United States.

The event is held every two years with the coast hosting the 16th games.
