Sharpen your pencils and turn on your creative brain for the World’s Biggest Drawing Festival, The Big Draw, which is being held in the Crown Street Mall this October.

Presented by Wild Rumpus and Wollongong City Council, The Big Draw is a free event for everyone from 6-96 years to take part in the most ancient form of communication – drawing.

“This is the first time we’ve brought this international festival to Wollongong,” Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“The Big Draw is all about letting loose, experimenting and most importantly having fun. Its theme is play and I encourage everyone to come along, pick up a pencil and get creative. This is all part of our ongoing focus to bring people in to the City Centre and take a fresh look at the diversity of what’s on offer.”

The Daily Draw starts on Tuesday 2 October and will run each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11am-2pm each week of the school holidays. The Daily Draw includes free workshop sessions from 11am-12 noon, which can be booked through the Wild Rumps website and include Mandala Illustration, Charcoal Drawing and Japanese Calligraphy.

The Big Draw gets started on Saturday 6 October with Colour for a Day. The event is between 10am-2pm and everyone is invited to pick up a Drawing Passport and experience each of the ‘stations’ that have been set up. They’re themed Nature Play, Geo Plan, Ocean Play and Mandala Play and reflect our region and culture. There will also be interactive public drawing activities.

Wild Rumpus co-founder Caitlin Marshall said they were excited to bring The Big Draw to Wollongong. “It’s a great opportunity to be reminded that every single person is able to make marks, lines and patterns – that’s what drawing is,’’ Ms Marshall said. “We also love to host an event that highlights some of our fantastic local artists and illustrators. We are looking forward to seeing the community of Wollongong – all ages – at The Big Draw.’’
