Australian war veteran and double amputee Commando Damien Thomlinson will be special guest speaker at a National Safe Work Month event held by Toowoomba Regional Council on October 3, in the City Hall Annex. Doors open at 5.30pm.for 6.00pm start. Entry is FREE.

Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) Portfolio Leader, Finance and Business Strategy Cr Megan O’Hara Sullivan said “National Safe Work Month is an annual celebration that encourages working Australians to get involved in and concentrate on safety in their workplace to reduce death, injury and disease”. 

‘Theme for this year’s Safe Work Month is ‘A moment is all it takes’ and provides Council with an opportunity to promote to staff the need to stop and think about safety.

“Taking a safety moment can be as simple as spending five minutes every morning talking to your workmates about the hazards and risks in the workplace and what needs to be done to prevent them” Cr O’Hara Sullivan said.

Private Damien Thomlinson experienced first-hand ‘A moment is all it takes’ for accidents to happen. Accidents that can turn your whole life around in that moment.

As an Australian War veteran of the Afghanistan War and former member of the elite 2nd Commando Regiment Private Damien Thomlinson like many other soldiers, can be described as a war hero.

‘A moment was all it took though for Private Thomlinson to also become a double amputee.

‘Most of us can only imagine the pain, emotions and obstacles Private Thomlinson went through on his road to recovery. But he had no time for self-pity. He threw himself into his rehabilitation.

It wasn’t easy, but with incredible determination and drive he taught himself to walk again with his ‘new state of the art legs’ and set about reclaiming life on his terms.

From Soldier, best-selling author, Paralympian, 2014 and 2016 Australian member Invictus games, participating in the Tasmania Classic Car Rally (TARGA), walking the Kokoda Tack, Actor, being cast alongside Andrew Garfield, Vince Vaughan and Sam Worthington in movie Hacksaw Ridge to co-hosting this year Invictus Games, Private Thomlinson has stayed determined not to waste a moment of his life, biting the bullet taking on challenges when opportunities arose.
