Eighth Avenue more pedestrian friendly

The bustling Eighth Avenue is set to benefit from further upgrades as part of the City's Place Activation Plan for the Maylands Town Centre. The revitalisation project includes replacing existing benches with modern multipurpose seating, upgrading street bins and installing giant planter boxes filled with trees and greenery along the centre of the street.

This second stage of upgrades comes after improvements to the median strip and road resurfacing were completed in April this year.  City of Bayswater Mayor Dan Bull said the upgrades will create a more walkable Eighth Avenue for all ages. "With more than 15 percent of Bayswater residents aged 65 and over, creating age-friendly public places in our City is more important than ever.

"We've taken feedback on board from older residents about where they most often like to sit when visiting the Maylands Town Centre, and made sure we're providing age-friendly seating in these locations. Places like outside the medical centre, near the taxi rank and in areas where the street is on an incline will be a focus," said Mayor Bull.

The new seating will be a mixture of modern 'box' seats and traditional seats with backs and armrests more suitable for older adults.

"The revitalisation of Eight Avenue was a top priority identified at the City's Place Activation Workshops last year, so we're thrilled to make the improvements the community has asked for."

Upgrades to Eighth Avenue are currently in progress and expected to be complete over the next few months.
