One person’s trash can be another person’s artwork at SmArt Ballarat.
SmArt (Sustainably Made Art from Recycled Trash) is an art competition with a difference run by the City of Ballarat in conjunction with BYou Ballarat and Grampians Central West Waste and Resource Recovery Group as part of National Recycling Week.
The idea behind the competition is to start seeing waste as a useful product, not just rubbish.
All the artworks must be made from used or recycled materials, with original products only to be used for assembling the work, binding, bonding and adhering paint.
The artwork must not be more than 100 centimetres in width or depth and three-dimensional works can be free standing or wall mounted.
Categories include SmArt Open, which is for community members over the age of 18, SmArt Youth, for people aged between 13 and 17, and SmArt Young, for 8 to 12-year-olds.
Prizes range from $100 to $600, and award-winning entries will be on display at the Ballarat Town Hall from November 12 to 19.
Registrations are now open and close on 28 October at 5pm.
Art pieces can be submitted at the Ballarat Showgrounds Woolworths Pavilion between November 6 and 7, between 4pm and 5pm.
All pieces will be displayed at the Ballarat Show from November 9 to 11 between 9.30am and 4pm, and winners will be awarded their prize from the City of Ballarat.
