As the warmer weather approaches and snakes become more active, make sure you have an action plan in place to deal with uninvited slithering guests in your home, garden or workplace.

The most common snakes in the City of Wanneroo are Tiger Snakes and Dugites (Spotted Brown Snakes) which are both venomous.

City of Wanneroo Rangers are not authorised to handle snakes but assistance is just a phone call away should you come across a snake away from its natural habitat.

Phone the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions’ wildlife helpline on 9474 9055 or your nearest registered snake catcher. Visit www.snakecatchers.com for details.

In the meantime, keep a safe distance and do not try to harm the snake—80 per cent of snake bites are caused by inexperienced people trying to move them on or kill them.

Avoid any sudden movements which can cause the snake to slither out of sight.

It’s important to keep snakes in sight until the catcher arrives so that they can be removed as quickly as possible.

Once snakes are caught they are released back into the bush, away from homes.
