Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) is encouraging everyone to come along and grab yourself a bargain bush at the Crows Nest Community Nursery Open Day on Saturday, October 6 from 8am - 2pm. With hundreds of native plants up for selection you are sure to find something to ‘plant in that spot’ in your garden.

The open day will also provide community members an opportunity to purchase plants that are indigenous to the Toowoomba Regional area.

TRC Portfolio Leader Environment and Community Cr Joe Ramia said the nursery has a vast range of trees from rainforest species, eucalypts, acacias and native pines. They also have many native plants, from ground covers through to shrubs, climbers and even Grass Trees.

“The nursery’s plants are essential for the survival and wellbeing of our native animals.

“By planting and nurturing local native plants you are giving our native fauna the food they need,” Cr Ramia said.

“Crows Nest Community Nursery grows only endemic plants of the Toowoomba Region. The plants that are adapted to our local conditions are the best food sources for our native fauna

“If you live on acreage and would like to encourage wildlife generally into your property these native plants are perfect if you would like to attract birds and butterflies into your garden.

“Twenty volunteers lend a hand and help out at the nursery, which is just as well, because the Community Nursery provides stock for National Tree Day each year and supports community events such as the Toowoomba Camellia Show and Garden Expo and World Environment Day.

“More volunteers are needed. With the focus on ‘Growing the wild plants’ of the Toowoomba Region, Crows Nest Community Nursery needs help to assist in the gathering of  Acacia Harpophylla or Brigalow seeds, Cr Ramia said.

“If you are looking for something to do, a hobby, meet new plant minded people or interested in helping our environment Crow’s Nest Community Nursery staff would love to meet you”.
