Jayden Kores-Vasakos [guitar] talks with Lord Mayor Wollongong City Cr Gordon Bradbery AM and Rascal Wheeler [ukulele] about the Open Day, 13 Oct, at the Youth Centre.
The Youth Centre was officially opened in July 1993, following a suggestion from the then Young Lord Mayor Darren Newton. Wollongong Art Gallery occupied the building prior to it being refurbished as a Youth Centre.
Katie Kapp, Coordinator Youth Services, said: “The Youth Centre has changed a lot since its inception in 1993. We now have many programs and events which are managed and coordinated by young people, one of which is Team Ignite that help coordinate and run youth centre events. We run a number of safe, fun, free programs, projects and events providing spaces which support young people to socialise, learn new skills and build their capacity.
“On Saturday 13 October we will open the centre so that everyone who is interested in what we are doing now can come along and check out how we have changed and also see the new services and events that we provide for young people.”
The Open Day will begin at 11am and continue until 4pm.
The Centre will also hold Music for the Mind concert on Friday 12 October during Mental Health Month. This event is held in partnership with headspace and will feature seven local bands playing from 6pm at Wollongong Youth Centre.
Also during the school holidays the Youth Centre will feature hang out sessions on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday. There will be basketball, pool, table tennis, air hockey, TV, foosball table and a chill-out room.
Sessions will be held on Tuesdays between 1pm – 4pm, Thursdays 3pm – 8pm & Saturdays 1 – 4pm.
