Ferry signs receive LED treatment Thursday 04 October

Signage at both Raymond Island and Paynesville has been improved for all users of East Gippsland Shire Council’s Raymond Island Ferry.

One sign is located on the roof of the ferry shelter in Paynesville and another in the carpark on Raymond Island. Both signs are positioned in a manner that allows pedestrians and vehicle traffic to see the signs. Earlier this week, the two installed LED signs were switched on and commissioned.

Council’s Acting Director Operations Fiona Weigall said the move to electronic messaging was part of council’s approach to ensuring that ferry users are able to receive full and timely information o the ferry service.

“Controlled via wireless mobile phone connections, the full-colour screens will be used to display different types of messages about the ferry service,” Ms Weigall said.

“We will also be displaying emergency management information such as Total Fire Ban days, and will use the sign for messages regarding the safe operation of the ferry along with general road safety messages.”

The signs are completely weather proof and contained in marine grade stainless steel cabinets sealed against the ingress of salt laden air and moisture. Signs were supplied by a LED sign manufacturer and the mounting steel work fabricated by Council’s ferry welding and fabrication contractor who also undertook the installation of their parts along with the actual signs. Council’s concreting concrete crew and electrical contractor for the ferry were also engaged.

While some minor work remains to be completed on the project, including the connection of temperature sensors and roofing, the signs are now operational.

The signs will be tested over the next week to ensure they are fully functional.
