Mayor requests CBA reconsider Portland Branch Closure – cites potential of Portland and Wallerawang

Mayor Ray Thompson today called on the Commonwealth Bank to reconsider its intention to close its Portland Branch suggesting there is an opportunity for the Bank to entrench itself in a growing and loyal community which is well placed to benefit from continuing growth in Western Sydney.

I acknowledge that the CBA has considered its position based on a range of circumstances, but would ask that the CBA consider the following in the context of its decision already made and with the possibility of review.” said Mayor Ray Thompson today.

“The points that I ask the CBA to consider are-

That both Portland and Wallerawang districts are in my view, identified as long term population growth areas as metropolitan Western Sydney continues to exceed growth expectations and people seek the lifestyle quality offered in both locations.. In my view, the potential for long term growth in those areas has been one underlying reason for forging links with Western Sydney and in part a catalyst for the recent invitation for Lithgow City Council to join the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils which has now been accepted. The footprint for WSROC is now identical to that of the Local Health District (Nepean) reflecting the growing community of interest incorporating the Lithgow LGA into greater Western Sydney.

It is my belief, in the context of 1, 2 and 3 above, there is an opportunity for the CBA not only to maintain a presence in Portland but to entrench itself in the long term with a growing and loyal customer base.” said Cr Thompson.

Council Administration has today written to Mr Angus Sullivan, Group Executive Retail Banking Services requesting the CBA review its decision and maintain its branch presence in Portland for the long term and the potential that is on offer.
