Following a public tender, Council has appointed the contract for the reconstruction of the WL Simpson Reserve in Hampton to Evergreen Turf Group Pty Ltd.

The reserve, which consists of two full sized soccer pitches and a synthetic cricket wicket, currently has issues related to poor drainage, irrigation and low quality turf.

The sportsground will be reconstructed with improved irrigation, drainage and new turf which will improve playability so that it can be used year round for both summer and winter sports.

As part of the contract, any existing vegetation at the reserve will be preserved and drought tolerant turf will be used to minimise future water use.

The main user of the sportsground is Hampton Junior Soccer Club, who use the facility during winter months to field over twenty eight teams and have more than 700 members.

In Bayside soccer participation has increased dramatically in recent years, with 41% more players overall and 118% more women and girls, between 2009 and 2017.

During summer months, the sports ground is put to use by the Hampton Central Cricket Club, who have approximately one hundred and thirty playing members.

The works form part of the Council’s Recreation Strategy 2013-2022, which seeks to enhance the quality of sports infrastructure to meet increased levels of participation.
