The Great Western Games is a multi-sport event held biennially in north-west Queensland. It is hosted by the North Queensland Sports Foundation (NQSF) and is proudly supported by Charters Towers Regional Council.
The games will take place in various locations across the Overlanders Way, including Charters Towers, Hughenden, Richmond, Julia Creek, Cloncurry and Mount Isa.
The event will be held over two weekends, from 22-23 June 2019 and 29-30 June 2019. It will include traditional sports such as netball, golf and rugby; with eagerness to also feature adventure-based competitions such as motorsports and fishing.
The NQSF is now calling for expressions of interest from local sports clubs interested in hosting an event during the Great Western Games.
This event provides local clubs with the opportunity to showcase their club to a broad range of competitors who are eager to experience competition in the outback.
The Great Western Games is a great platform to promote the healthy and active lifestyle of our community, by highlighting the vast variety of sports and recreation in our region.
We are very fortunate in the Charters Towers region to have such a rich and diverse sporting culture. It is thanks to our local sporting clubs and their volunteers that community members have access to these wonderful sports opportunities.
Athletes, officials and supporters will have the opportunity to participate in this unique event whilst discovering the unspoilt beauty, history and character of our region and broader outback Queensland.
I strongly encourage all local sporting clubs to consider hosting an event for next year’s games.
