Register for Ride2Work Day Free Breakfast

Published on 08 October 2018

Baw Baw Shire Council is hosting a free breakfast for riders participating in this year’s National Ride2Work Day on Wednesday 17 October.

Ride2Work Day is Australia’s largest celebration of commuter riding coordinated by the Bicycle Network. Held annually in October, the day celebrates the benefits of riding to work and brings together the communities that support it.

The free breakfast, which aims to entice more rider involvement, will be held from 7.30am to 9.00am on Wednesday 17 October at Queen Street Park in Warragul.

Riders can enjoy a free coffee and hot breakfast provided by the Lions Club, including healthy options such as fresh fruit and muffins. Participants can take part in fun activities and opportunities including the chance to try an E-Bike, express spin classes, blender bike smoothies, spot prizes, giveaways and live entertainment by Warragul Regional College music students.

Mayor of Baw Baw Shire Cr Joe Gauci is encouraging residents to hop on their bikes, get active and get involved in Ride2Work Day.

“If you have never ridden to work before, I urge you to take this opportunity to give it a go! And if you’re already a regular then we want you to stay motivated and encourage your work mates to get involved”, said the Mayor.

“Statistics from the Bicycle Network show that currently two thirds of Australians don’t get enough exercise to maintain their health. At the same time, our road networks are being choked by traffic. Health and congestion costs are draining billions out of our economy each year.

“Riding to work also has huge benefits to both employees and employers. As well as increasing mental and physical health, according to Bicycle Network, workplaces that support bike-riding employees can reduce absenteeism by up to 80 per cent.”

Cr Mikaela Power said swapping your current transport for a bike has many benefits and is better for your body, mind, wallet and environment.

“Riding 10 kilometres each way to work saves 1.3 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year. It’s also one of the easiest and most time-efficient ways to fit exercise into a daily routine”, said Cr Power.

“At the end of the day, we want to normalise the idea of riding to work and we encourage everyone to be part of the solution and give it a go this National Ride2Work Day.”
