Work on the installation of a new power supply for the Mt Keira Summit Park will begin this month with a new overhead and underground powerline installed from Mt Pleasant. The power line has been designed to span above the tree canopy of the Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area (IESCA).
Power is required at Summit Park to service the communications tower, which contains both commercial and emergency services transmitters, Council’s amenities block, water pumps, barbeques and a new pop-up style temporary kiosk. Prior to this new line power on the site has been provided by diesel generators.
We’ve been working closely with Endeavour Energy and the National Parks and Wildlife Service to gain approvals for construction of the new power supply, and to ensure sensitive vegetation is protected while the work is undertaken. Council completed reconstruction of an existing access track in 2017 in preparation for installing the new overhead power line.
Council will take delivery of new power poles in December 2018, with a new power pole located in the IESCA to be installed by helicopter. This will allow easier access to the site as well as minimise environmental impacts on the escarpment area.
Ahead of the installation of the power poles, contractors will carry out trenching works within the Queen Elizabeth Drive road reserve over the next two months. While this work is underway, we’re asking drivers to take additional care along the road and to follow the advice of traffic control staff.
Works on the power line installation are expected to be completed by May 2019, depending on weather.
