Livingstone Shire residents are being invited to sing in harmony at Yeppoon’s beachfront this month, to celebrate World Singing Day on 20 October.
The global sing-a-long event aims to celebrate our common humanity, using the power of singing together to connect people and communities around the world.
Mayor Bill Ludwig said our region had always held a strong sense of community spirit, and this event supported our united vision of connecting people in a meaningful way.
“This is a fantastic inaugural event for the Capricorn Coast region, which is also the only regional event being held in Queensland outside of the South-East corner, and I must commend community champion Jan Boyd for proposing the idea to Council,” Mayor Ludwig said.
“Music is a powerful tool that brings joy and happiness to people in any capacity, and we’re excited to see friends, families, school groups, local clubs and people of all ages and backgrounds come together to be part of this international event.”
Organiser of World Singing Day and musician Jan Boyd said music was a universal language that brought people together.
“Music speaks to you in a way that words cannot, and singing gives purpose to the music,” Mrs Boyd said.
“So when singing is shared among a group of people, it creates unity and a very special connection and that’s what we want to achieve as part of this event. We’re encouraging the community to learn the song beforehand by downloading the lyrics and audio file online and then come along and experience the joy of singing in a group.
“You don’t have to have the best singing voice, everyone’s voice is unique and every voice is accepted and welcomed. This event is not a concert but a sing-a-long, and lyric sheets will also be handed out at the event for participants to read from.
“We hope to make this an annual event, and make it bigger and better each year.”
Yeppoon’s World Singing Day event will be held on Saturday, 20 October at 10am at the Stage Roof Amphitheatre. The 2018 Song of the Year is “Ode to Song”, sung to the tune of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy”.
