We use steam rather than chemicals to weed in or near playgrounds, kindergartens and childcare centres in Bayside.
Council has not used "Roundup", or products that contain glyphosate in or near playgrounds or kindergartens since 2016. All weeds in these areas are treated using steam.
During 2017/2018 Council spent over $130,000 on weed steam control and has allocated over $140,000 in 2018/19.
Our contractors use products containing glyphosate or Roundup for the control of annual and perennial weed species in garden beds in Bayside parks.
Glyphosate is registered for use in Australia by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA). APVMA approved products containing glyphosate can be used safely according to label directions.
Glyphosate use in Bayside is conducted according to APVMA regulations and Work Safe Victoria guidelines. This includes using targeted, best practice methods only when weather and wind conditions are favourable.
