Don’t miss out on nominating for the 2018 International Day of People with a Disability Awards

The awards aim to honour and recognise the outstanding achievements of individuals within the Livingstone Shire region, who have worked towards improving the lives of people living with a disability.

Community Development Councillor Jan Kelly said these awards acknowledge the contribution to greater social inclusion, increased recognition of equality, and human rights for all Australians.

“With around one in five Queenslanders living with a disability, Council is extremely proud to support and promote the awards which honour both individuals and community groups working to support and improve the life of people with disabilities,” Cr Kelly said.

“There are many people across our diverse community who experience the greatest difficulties accessing venues and services. This includes people with a medical condition (20%), people living with a disability (18.5%), people over sixty (17%) and people with a temporary injury (13.2%).”

The Mayor’s Award, which recognises a personal or community carer, or a support worker – who by their formal or informal care of an individual or group of people who live with a disability – has significantly improved the lives of the person or group they are caring for. This Award was presented to Sonni Hill in 2017.

The Yeppoon Lions’ Beryl Dowling Award recognises the person with a disability who has worked towards improving the lives of people with a disability and contributed to greater social inclusion, or has done tremendous general community work and is a community champion within the Livingstone Shire community. This Award was presented to Robyn Kendall in 2017.

Cr Kelly strongly encourages the community to nominate someone special for either of the above awards, which honour and recognise the outstanding achievements of individuals within Livingstone Shire.

“The winner of each category will receive a personal trophy and every nominee will receive a certificate at the award presentation on 3 December. The morning tea ceremony will be held from 9am to 11am at Yeppoon Town Hall,” Cr Kelly said.
