In an effort to highlight and overcome issues of poverty and hardship, Council is inviting the community to take part in its fundraising event during Anti-Poverty Week (14 – 20 October).

On Friday 19 October from 11am to 2pm, at the Community Centre Gardens, John St Yeppoon, Council will be hosting a donations stall where residents can contribute to the ICare Community Project and Community Centre Community Groups.

Community Development Councillor Jan Kelly said this wonderful, inclusive community event would also feature a cake and plant stall, free sausage sizzle, as well as a Community Groups Garage Sale.

“We’re encouraging residents to come along and an enjoy a fantastic morning in the Community Centre gardens, while supporting those in need by donating essential items like non-perishable food or men and women’s personal hygiene products,” Cr Kelly said.

“We live in a beautiful part of the world but sadly, there are many people doing it tough within our region. Whether they are homeless, living between homes, struggling financially, having difficult family problems or relationship issues, it’s important that these people feel supported during their most vulnerable moments.

“I strongly encourage anybody who can spare a few items to come along to this special event, to both bring and buy to give back to our residents who need it most.”

Council would like to thank EnviroLink, Capricorn Coast Landcare Group, Community Centre User Groups and Seaside Stitchers for their support of this event.

The Centre also accepts donations for other programmes connected to the ICare Community Project including Share the Dignity, Alternative Learning Spaces, Operations Education and the Yeppoon Salvation Army.

For those who can’t make it on the day but wish to donate to, please phone 4913 3840 or drop in to the Community centre, 80 John St during business hours.

ICare Community Project donations that are welcome include non-perishable food items, women’s and men’s personal hygiene products like shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, soap, toothpaste, tooth brushes and blankets.
