Ipswich City Council will wait until development has progressed and functional roads can be built before opening up River Road, Bundamba.
Infrastructure Services Department acting chief operating officer Tony Dileo said a community petition to open River Road, north of Nelson Street, Bundamba, was presented to council in May 2018.
Residents suggested that if River Road was made available to through traffic it would provide vehicles with safe access to the Warrego Highway; alleviate traffic around the Bundamba TAFE; and alleviate the nearby intersection of Bognuda and Law Street.
“Council has considered several historical and planned activities for the area when reaching a determination to keep River Road closed, which was endorsed by interim administrator Greg Chemello at the Infrastructure Services Committee today,” he said.
“The key for council remains the separation of the industrial precinct and residential traffic, as well as implementing the recommendations provided as part of an independent Traffic Impact Assessment for the Bremer Business Park, including closing River Road to through traffic.”
Mr Dileo said as part of the future development of the Bremer Business Park, a new east-west link will be provided in Stage 6 of the development. This will facilitate movements through to Bognuda Street as well as access to the Warrego Highway.
“Due to ongoing maintenance and safety concerns on River Road (north of Nelson Street), council will need to consider a more permanent means of closing the road. It is likely that a series of concrete barriers will be installed,” he said.
“Once development in the area has progressed, the concrete barriers will be removed. At that time, traffic will be able to travel along appropriately designed functional roads for east-west movements; Archer Street will be closed and the existing temporary road will be removed.”
Council will write to people who signed the petition explaining the decision.
