With the theme of ‘Through the Ages’ this year’s Fun Palaces events promise even more interactive activities at Libraries across Dalby, Miles, Chinchilla and Jandowae this October.
Fun Palaces provides a day of experimentation and co-creation in science, technology and the arts, where children can try a wide range of hands-on activities led by local community groups and businesses.
Hosted by Western Downs Libraries, Fun Palaces will be delivered in partnership with Queensland Museum’s Future Makers, who will be providing interactive palaeontology activities.
Other activities include robots, virtual reality and green screens, a ninja warrior course in Dalby, and parkour workshops in Miles, Chinchilla, and Jandowae.
Director of Teaching and Learning at Our Lady of the Southern Cross College Kathy Morgan said that their College has participated in Fun Palaces with Western Downs Libraries for the last two years.
“Each year we have enjoyed the opportunity to promote technology, art and early learning to the community,” Mrs Morgan said.
“It encourages children to get involved in a huge range of cool ‘hands on’ activities that make learning interesting and fun, and we are definitely on-board again this year.”
Councillor Kaye Maguire said that last year families came to have a quick look and ended up staying for hours.
“These events demonstrate how our libraries are progressive places of learning and places for community connection, because attendees will get to experiment, ask questions, learn and make connections.
“All of the activities were popular but the virtual reality events such as the HTC Vive were particular crowd favourites.”
A ‘families and toddlers Fun Palace’ zone will be hosted by the Western Downs Early Years Reference Group and concentrate on offering opportunities, information and networking for parents and their young children ages 0 to 5.
Each of the Fun Palaces will run between 10am to 1pm, with attendees able to drop-in at any time during the three hours.
Live music will also be at the events as part of the Council’s Groovin’ into Town spring music series. For more information on the Fun Palaces events visit www.westerndownslibraries.com or call 1300 COUNCIL.
